When reliever Michael Bowden arrived at Wrigley Field Monday, fresh off his trade from the Red Sox for Marlon Byrd, Cubs management could not believe how much he resembled Chris Carpenter, the pitcher who was injured shortly after being shipped to Boston as compensation for Theo Epstein.

According to Epstein, when Bowden arrived in Chicago, he learned both pitchers are six-foot-four, 220 pounds and have eerily similar throwing motions. Oddly, both answer to the name “Chris” or “Carp.”

“The similarities between Bowden and Carpenter are uncanny really,” said Epstein. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think the Red Sox are trying to pull a fast one on us. But they’re not that smart, are they?”
