It seemed like a great idea at the time. Giving a new dog a catchy name is common after all, and as a big Bears fan, Taylor Ortiz thought it would be fitting if he named his newly adopted dog after a Bears player.

“We adopted him on the same day the Bears signed Parkey, so we figured why not name our pooch ‘Cody Barkey’?” said Ortiz, of Hoffman Estates. “Well, now I know why not.”

Ortiz said he’s been regretting the quippy name of his beloved pooch since shortly after Parkey’s missed/blocked field goal attempt that would have won the game against the Eagles Sunday evening. And now he’s not sure how to handle it.

“I can’t change Cody Barkey’s name, because he recognizes it,” said Ortiz, “and I could just call him ‘Cody,’ but that will forever give me flashbacks to Sunday night, so I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

Ortiz added that he was considering giving the dog to a relative or maybe putting it up for adoption in the Philadelphia area where the name will be more popular.

“Except I’ve seen videos of fans from Philly eating horse dung,” said Ortiz, “so I can’t imagine they’ll treat my beloved pooch with the respect he deserves.”
