With softball headlines like “Lilly is not a flower” and “‘D-Lee’ader,” the official Cubs magazine Vine Line hardly seems like a harbinger of doom, but that’s just what it’s been for each and every team member it has ever featured.

“Everyone knows about the infamous Sports Illustrated curse, but few people are aware of the negative energy brought about by Vine Line,” said Cubs chairman Crane Kenney. “This winter one cover featured free agent signees Milton Bradley, Aaron Miles, Kevin Gregg, Luis Vizcaino and Joey Gathright and each and every one of them has had a terrible 2009 campaign for us.

“That’s just too freaky to simply be bad judgement by our front office to sign them in the first place.”
