Two of the Cubs’ most vital pieces are wisely on the injured list at just the right time.

Closer Craig Kimbrel and catcher Willson Contreras each will miss extended time after shrewdly suffering injuries this weekend.

“We’re excited to lose both these key contributors so they can chill now and be well-rested for the last month or so of the regular season,” said Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein, whose team is clinging to a slight lead in the NL Central. “Last year we ran out of gas down the stretch so hopefully a few more of our extremely important players will luckily hit the IL in the next week or so.”

Epstein said he was hoping Kris Bryant aching knee would send him to the injured list.

“Unfortunately Kris came back Monday night but there’s still hope he or another couple of our stars will get hurt so they can get some rest soon.”
