Ron Gardenhire was named 2010 AL Manager of the Year Wednesday, marking the first time since 2002 the Twins skipper has won anything after the conclusion of the regular season.

“So this is what it feels like to succeed after Oct. 1,” said Gardenhire, whose Twins who have lost 12 straight postseason games to the Yankees going back to 2004. “I always heard it was possible to win something after the regular season but heck if I know.”

Gardenhire’s Twins have a post-season record of 6-21 with their only one series win coming in Gardenhire’s first season (2002) ALDS against the A’s. The skipper — whose contract is about to be renewed — said he’s happy his post-season failures haven’t gone unrewarded.

“Coaching in Minnesota is great,” said Gardenhire. “All I have to do is give them a sniff of the playoffs and they make me king. Can you imagine what it would be like if we actually beat the Yankees just once? Yeah, me neither.”
