Rather than watch it live, fans with real jobs may have simply assumed the Cubs would take Wednesday afternoon’s rubber match against lowly Washington. That would have been a mistake as the goddamned Nationals took the series with a 3-2 win.

Normally a series win against the doormat Nationals would be a given for most any team, but most of the Cubs’ issues can be pinned on the 28 men on they left on base for the series. As a team only trail Milwaukee in that category for the season.

Manager Lou Piniella is at his wit’s end.

“Aw heck, I don’t know. We’ve got our guys walking more and striking out less,” said Piniella. “If I really cared about the situation I’d do something about it, but I’m sure it’ll work itself out just in time for the starting pitching to collapse.”
