Saying they don’t intend to put an undue amount of pressure on their manager, the Cubs have reportedly informed Joe Maddon the team will have to go undefeated in order to keep his job this season.

“Success is all about managing expectations so with all the speculation about Joe’s job security, we wanted him to be aware that his place here was completely secure so long as he met our expectations,” said President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein. “And in this case, our expectation is that the Cubs go undefeated in 2019.”

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer added further perspective.

“It’s a very competitive landscape out there for Major League Baseball managers and Joe is aware of that,” said Hoyer. “In today’s climate, not even one loss is acceptable and Joe will have to manage the team with those expectations.”

Added Epstein: “Happy Opening Day everyone!”
