ESPN football analyst Trent Dilfer had harsh words for Jay Cutler after the Bears QB lowered his shoulder and delivered a stunning blow to oncoming defender Robert Golden during a critical third-down scramble against Pittsburgh Sunday night. The run got the Bears a first down and proved to be a momentum-changer in their 40-23 win.

“If Jay Cutler wants to be the franchise quarterback he’s paid to be, there’s no reason for him to take that hit,” said Dilfer. “You’re not going to see Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Peyton Manning take a hit like that and Jay shouldn’t either.”

Dilfer was also asked what his opinion would have been if Cutler had slid instead of avoid contact.

“Sliding?” said Dilfer. “That would have been a total candy-ass move.”
