Inspired by the Chicago Blackhawks’ historic run of 24 games without a regulation loss, the Cubs have vowed to equal the streak by losing two dozen games to open their 2013 campaign.

“The Blackhawks have become synonymous with winning in this town, so that mantle is taken,” said Cubs president Theo Epstein. “But losing? We own that. And that’s how we plan to make history — with ineptitude the likes of which baseball and Chicago have never seen.”

Matching the Hawks loss-for-win, and captivating the entire sports world in the process, is a tall order but one the Cubs are happy to take on.

“From the bottom of my heart, I believe we can do this,” said Cubs manager Dale Sveum. “By the time we’re done, Chicago will be amazed at our unprecedented assault on the record books.”
