While he only had 20 ABs as a Cub, the Joey Gathright legacy will liveĀ onĀ forever in the hearts of thousands of fans, who were saddened to learn the speedy outfielder was dealt to the Orioles Friday night for Ryan Freel.

“I’m heart-broken we’ll never get to see the real Joey,” said Michael Scottlee, a fan who said his favorite Gathright memory was each and every one of Gathright’s three hits in a Cubs uniform. “I thought his .214 batting average was just the beginning to something much more impressive. Who knows? Maybe he would have hit .225 if Lou [Piniella] would have given him more chances.”
