Bulls, Kings to wear NHL costumes, play hockey game tonight

The Bulls open the season tonight at the United Center by playing the Sacramento Kings. However, a Halloween event is planned by both teams with a nod to the NHL strike.

The Bulls will dress up as the Blackhawks and the Kings will dress up as the Los Angeles Kings, winners of the Stanley Cup. The two basketball teams will then go about and play a hockey game.

Fans are encouraged to get in the Halloween spirit by coming to the game dressed in costumes.

Kings surpass Sparks as seventh most popular Los Angeles team after Stanley Cup win

The L.A. Kings Stanley Cup run has them more popular than ever, jumping past the WNBA’s Sparks and a fictional football team from “Any Given Sunday” as the city’s seventh most popular team.

“Winning the Cup is great, but becoming more popular than the Sparks and a fake football team from a late-’90s Oliver Stone movie is really what this is all about,” said Kings GM Dean Lombardi during the team’s post-game victory celebration Monday night. “All I have to say is ‘Look out unnamed NFL team that might move here in 2016. We’re coming for you!’”

Los Angeles hipster claims he was into the Kings last year

As the Kings wrapped up their unlikely Stanley Cup run Monday night, Echo Park hipster Stan Gatlin made sure everyone around him remembered how huge a fan he was of the team last year, well before anyone else in town.

“It’s pretty easy for everyone to jump on the bandwagon now,” said Gatlin, while pounding a PBR at the Cha Cha Lounge in Silver Lake. “People forget how into the team I was last year, but that’s cool. I’m used to this sort of thing.”

Gatlin said he hardly paid attention to the team this season, especially after the trade deadline when they picked up Jeff Carter and actually rooted against them in the playoffs. He said his team of choice has since become the Sacramento Kings, mostly because L.A. newscasts were confusing the NBA Kings for the NHL Kings as recently as a couple weeks ago.

“I figure a team that obscure will be safe for me to follow for a while,” said Gatlin. “There’s nothing worse than being a fan of a team that’s got more than a few thousand followers. I thought I’d be safe with the L.A. Kings but then they had to ruin my ability to enjoy them by capturing the sport’s ultimate prize. That’s so lame.”
