Fox-32 leads off 9 p.m. news with live interview of Robbie Gould
Never mind it was Martin Luther King Day Monday. Never mind a local Iraqi vet’s funeral was held in the suburbs today. The big news in town is that the Bears won yesterday and Fox-32 decided to lead off their newscast with it. What a better way to do it than with a 10-minute live interview of kicker and hero of the moment Robbie Gould.

Titled “Solid Gould,” the “exclusive” interview included hard-hitting footage of Gould surfing the Web at his home (he owns a Mac laptop!) and questions from Corey McPherrin like “How many times have you seen replays of the play?” (Gould estimates 100!)
The segment concluded with another hard-hitting feature: a telephone poll asking viewers to weigh in on what was more to credit for the Bears’ big win, the offense or the defense.
Of course, no Fox segment would be complete without a shameless self promotion of another Fox show, in this case the station’s “Bears Mania” or similarly named 72-hour Bears pre-game show.
This frenzy is insane. While yesterday’s win over the Seahawks was extremely exciting and hosting the NFC Championship is a big deal, the Chicago media should keep in mind the Bears still have to win one more game before they even get to the Super Bowl, let alone win it. Let’s not treat the Bears like champions until they are.

There will be detailed bios of players and coaches dating back to their kindergarten days. Not based on a need to know, but on media ritual. Twenty weeks of useless information jammed into a two-week bag. The only factoid I'll possibly retain is Eli Manning of the Giants is Peyton Manning's younger brother, and their father is...I've already forgotten. Maybe I'll read it again somewhere by kickoff...a hundred times.
