Fulfilling a promise he made to his mother while a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, NBA all-star LeBron James has earned a college degree.

“When I was in high school, I promised mom that if she let me go pro that I would attend college in the off-season,” the proud James said.

Helping to speed up the process for James’ receiving a diploma was his recent purchase of a majority stake in University of Phoenix, the for-profit online college.

“Part of the deal when I bought into U of P was letting me take a special test to get the degree.” The exam, James said, consisted of “maybe nine or 10 questions.”

“They asked a lot of things about business, like what’s retail for a pair of Nike Zoom HyperChaos kicks,” James said. “The toughest questions were about things like ‘Who represents the Nike bowling gloves and swimming gear?’ stuff like that. I just guessed at names like Pete Weber and Ryan Lochte. I must have guessed right because I got a 25 percent, which I’m told means I graduated with honors.”

James said, “What I think I am just as proud of for earning the degree is that now they can list a college on my trading card.”
