Cubs GM Jim Hendry’s annual pre-Christmas week four-day nap ended Sunday morning when his cell phone rang with news that the rival Brewers had acquired Cy Young winner Zach Grienke from the Royals.

“Every mid-December I go into hibernation mode,” said Hendry. “After we signed Kerry Wood last week I shut ‘er down for 96 hours. I figured I had earned it.”

The Grienke acquisition suddenly makes the Brewers a contender next season in the NL Central. Hendry was surprised he missed out on the action.

“Doesn’t everyone take a four-day nap in December?” asked Hendry. “Surely I’m not the only GM sleeping on the job.”
